Harrisburg, PA, October 19th 2009. PresentCare, a technology enabled outreach services
company, announced today its new AdherencePlus™ solution, an innovative approach to assist
the healthcare industry in addressing the critical issue of medication non-adherence. The
AdherencePlus solution is comprised of a unique application of visual, auditory, and
communication technology combined with unprecedented human touch. Both of which are
essential components required in today's medication non-adherence crisis. Studies show that
approximately 50% of the two billion prescriptions filled each year are not taken as prescribed.
Compounding this, statistics show that despite information on the adverse effects of nonadherence,
patients typically take less than half of the prescribed dosage.
"Successful treatment of complex disease states requires that patients follow a comprehensive
medication regimen. This means patients have to take the right medication at the right time and
with the proper dosage. PresentCare's AdherencePlus solution connects the patient to the care
giver and medical team by the support and tracking that has been missing in other solutions,"
commented Michael T. Baer, M.D. Board Certified Family Practitioner.
Health insurers, Medicare/Medicaid Administrators, and Pharmacy Benefit Management are all
subject to the high costs of non-adherence. PresentCare's full service, population based
management program targets medication adherence at all service levels. This enables healthier
populations, fewer ER visits, and reduced hospital admissions and a substantial cost savings for
these organizations.
There are multiple products on the market today such as pill boxes, alarm watches and
automatic medication dispensers, all aimed at improving medication adherence. While each of
these products may improve adherence to some degree, they continue to rely solely on
technology and the individual patient to follow the regimen."The primary complaint we hear
from the market is that technology or services operating independently does not achieve the
required medication adherence," said William Bilyak, Director of Operations, PresentCare. "Our
unique integration of state of the art technology and services will help to obtain better patient
outcomes."
PresentCare works in conjunction with existing disease management (DM), case management
(CM), discharge planning, home health, commercial, medicaid and medicare programs to
enhance services and improve program outcomes. PresentCare integrates the technologies
and performs the initial outreach to minimize the cost of improved medication adherence while
maximizing the focus of existing programs.
AdherencePlus is a valuable tool for care management. It features a unique electronic pill box
that is connected to a full-service monitoring system, operational 24/7. The pill box transmits
alerts to the PresentCare coordination staff when medications are missed or taken at the wrong
time. For the mobile population, alerts sent to the patient can be customized to include phone
calls, pages, text messages, emails, and/or Interactive Voice Response (IVR). The level of
outreach is structured according to the degree of the alert pre-selected by the care team, patient
and caregiver. Based on the selected responses, a live outreach call may be made. This oneon-
one attention supports and motivates the patient, resulting in healthier outcomes. Linking
the technology and human service allows PresentCare to provide a full service medication
adherence program. Purely technology based organizations do not provide the wrap around
services such as initial and ongoing medication reconciliation, troubleshooting technology
related issues, triaging symptomatic calls and live education that is required to support
medication adherence.
As part of the process, PresentCare provides robust outcome reporting to the patient, caregiver
and physician. Linking the patient, caregivers and medical team gives the patient a sense of
accountability for their adherence levels and provides the physician with continuity of care.
